Workforce planning

What is workforce planning?

It’s the process of analyzing, forecasting, and planning workforce supply and demand, assessing gaps, and determining that the organization has the right people with the right skills in the right places at the right time.

What are the steps in workforce planning?

Workforce planning includes the following steps:

  • Aligning the organization’s strategic direction and its impact on the workforce
  • Analyzing the current and future workforce needs
  • Developing strategies to close skill gaps
  • Ensuring that the workforce planning strategies are successfully fulfilling the organization’s objectives

What are the benefits of workforce planning?

By having a plan in place, organizations can use any opportunities or resources that come their way. Therefore, the decisions are made according to the organization’s strategic needs. For example, many organizations are often tempted to promote someone from within the organization without considering the position’s needs or the consequences if that decision does not work out successfully.
